Cleaning Of Glass

Please ensure when cleaning glass, do not use any abrasive cleaning material as this will scratch the glass surface. Use a drop of liquid soap, mixed with clean water to wash your windows, then squeegee all the excess off and wipe with a soft micro cloth or lint free paper towel. A genuine Chamois Leather is also a very useful product to clean windows with.

Installation Of Glass

All glass installations undertaken by The Window Doctor's Installers have been polished at the edges prior to installation. This practice reduces the risk of glass cracking at a later stage. Most glass companies in South Africa do not follow this practice, creating a high risk of cracking from extreme temperatures and earth movement.

Warranty

All glass products supplied by The Window Doctor are guaranteed for a period of 15 years by the manufacturer only. The warranty extends to the replacement of the glass originally ordered to the original address only.

Products Specifications

Solar Energy is the amount of energy received from the sun, on the surface of the glass. This includes the energy from the Ultra-Violet, the visible light and Infra-Red segments of the solar system.

Solar Energy Absorption is the amount of absorption the glazing material will absorb from the solar energy. The higher the absorption, the greater the thermal stress on the glass and the more likely the glass is to crack if incorrectly glazed.

Solar Energy Direct transmission is the part of the sun's energy which passes directly through the glass. This is dependent on the environmental conditions as well as the light transmission of the glazing material chosen.

Solar Energy Reflection is the part of the sun's energy which is reflected by the glass or glazing material. This is dependant on the environmental conditions and the performance of the glass.

Solar Energy Elimination is the part of the sun's energy stopped by the glazing material. All specifications are measured according to ASHRAE American standards. Temperatures, environmental conditions and wind speeds will also effect the performance of the glazing material.

Total Solar Energy Transmitted is the amount of the solar energy that is allowed to pass through the glazing material. Sound control rating of glass is measured in decibels. Thick laminated glass provides a noticeable improvement in sound reduction.

Thermal breakage occurs when the glass is poorly glazed with no room for expansion during varying temperatures, causing stress on the glass. Professional glazers always polish edges to ensure the less likely-hood of glass cracking from stress.

Glass thickness

Glass comes in various thicknesses from 4mm up to 19 mm. Laminated and toughened glass is also available in various thicknesses.

U Values

The U Value is the measure of heat entering a building through the glazing material via conduction. The lower the U value, the better the insulating quality.

Visible Light Reflected is the visible light reflected by the glass when the sun shines at right angles to the surface of the glass.

Visible Light Transmitted is the the visible light transmitted through the glass when the sun shines at right angles to the surface of the glass. The higher the visible light transmission, the more transparent appearance one has indoors. Visible light transmittance can create havoc by increasing glare in work surfaces, computers and TV screens.

Visible Light Absorbed is the the amount of visible light absorbed by the glazing material.

Wind Load needs to be taken into consideration when choosing the thickness of the glass. This will also be determined by the framing system and location.

National Building Regulations

The Window Doctor always insists that the glass installed will comply with the National Building Regulations, which sets out stringent safety standards governing the installation of glass in buildings. The National Building Regulation calls for materials which offer the best level of protection in case of human impact.
